Control your Blackberry Storm device from your PC

You may have noticed applications that claim you can use Blackberry Messenger on our PC, the truth is that you can’t directly have an application just for BBM. Even though you have tried it, it may work. There is an official application recognized by RIM, that allows you to control the Blackberry Storm, and not only can you BBM, but also do anything at all.

Pocket Controller for Blackberry is a great application if you too lazy to stretch for your phone. There’s a catch here, you may think you just download the application on PC and your device, it isn’t that easy. The catch is that you have to either connect the device via WiFi or USB. The Linux users will be lucky if they have Wine installed, they can use the WiFi method, Trust me, the Virtual Box will just get you confused and it doesn’t work 100%.

The Virtual Box is pretty slow. The developers didn’t quite notice something when they made this, just download it and you can use it lifetime in trial mode rather than wasting money at all. This isn’t guaranteed to work with every Blackberry Storm device, especially the Blackberry Storm 9550, this does gladly work with the Blackberry Curve 8520.

foursquare and BBM: A Super App Meets the Social Platform (VIDEO)

One of the highlights for me this week at BlackBerry® World™ 2011 was having the opportunity to showcase some of the amazing work from developers starting to leverage the BBM social platform. Social networking application foursquare is one such example, and was demoed during the Tuesday General Session keynote by Senior Director of Developer Relations (and fellow Inside BlackBerry blogger) Mike Kirkup.
The above video is really three videos in one! First, I speak with Mike about the overall opportunity available to developers that integrate BBM social platform APIs into their application. Then, foursquare developers Pete and Jeff provide a great demonstration of foursquare for BlackBerry integrated with BBM. I then pass the mic to Mike for a brief sit down with Pete about developing for BlackBerry and how the coming BBM social platform integration enhances the foursquare super app experience.

Sprint Delays the 3G BlackBerry PlayBook

playbook delay 550x459 Sprint Delays the 3G BlackBerry PlayBook, again

The 3G BlackBerry PlayBook was scheduled to release on April 19th, but was then later pushed to May 8th. According to the leaked slide above, the 3G has been delayed indefinitely, but is still said to be releasing, as dealers are said to hold on to promo materials and pedestals. Sprint is also set to release a 4G WiMax version later this year. It isn’t certain what has caused the delay, some have speculated the CDMA radio technology, while others say to clear stock of the WiFi-only version from retailers.

RIM to launch 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook this fall - OS 7 devices delayed?

The guys over at BGR claim to have been told by 'multiple sources' that RIM is planning on releasing the next PlayBook design around this year's holiday season. Rumor has it the next PlayBook design will be a 10 inch model, adding to the already 7 inch model.

Also, via unconfirmed information - the just announced BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 will not be launching until mid-August at the earliest. The previous timeframe for the launch was during June/July. The launch has been delayed for reasons unknown. Additionally, the rest of RIM’s 2011 lineup won’t be announced until BlackBerry’s DevCon conference on October 18th. Apparently the hierarchy at RIM have been vocally unhappy about the “disproportionate” reallocation of resources to the PlayBook away from the OS 7 lineup.

Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones v2.0 (Beta)

Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones v2.0

What’s New in v2.0?

Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones v2.0

The focus of this iteration is simplified navigation. You’ll notice that the navigation bar has a sleek new look with simplified access to popular Twitter features. Now you can search for Tweets and people from a single location, as well as view Trends and Saved Searches, unifying the entire Twitter Search experience.

Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones v2.0

Another great feature for BlackBerry® 6 users: Twitter Search works with the universal search feature on your BlackBerry smartphone! Search for anything and the universal search tool will pull in relevant results from your entire BlackBerry smartphone, including all Search categories within Twitter.

In addition to the new black chrome color scheme, you’ll notice there’s a new “Compose Tweet” button located on the Nav Bar that acts as a single touch-point for composing Tweets from anywhere in the app.

POYNT INTRODUCES PAIRING FOR BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK

Poynt allows users to pair their BlackBerry smartphone to their BlackBerry Playbook Tablet to initiate calls to businesses, add contacts to the address book and more

Calgary, Canada —May 04, 2011—Poynt Corporation (“Poynt Corp.” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: PYN), a leading provider of mobile local search services, today announced they have released an update to their mobile application Poynt (or the “App”) for BlackBerry® Smartphones™.

The new version of Poynt for BlackBerry smartphones allows users to pair their BlackBerry smartphone with their BlackBerry® PlayBook™ to combine the convenience of viewing listings on the PlayBook tablet’s larger display while using the BlackBerry® smartphone to interact with the search results. Users can call businesses, add addresses to the address book or add events to the calendar on their smartphone. Mapping and directions can also be pushed to the smartphone.

Poynt for BlackBerry PlayBook delivers the same search categories users have come to expect from Poynt. Users can search for businesses, people, movies, events, restaurants, gas prices and weather information in their local area. Once users have located their desired listing, they can click-to-map, get directions, view movie showtimes and trailers, buy tickets, view restaurant reviews and book dining reservations all without leaving the App.

To enable the connectivity, users pair their BlackBerry smartphone with their PlayBook by simply selecting the ‘Pair with PlayBook’ tab in Poynt on their PlayBook and entering their BlackBerry smartphone PIN. They will then be given a security code to enter under a ‘Pair with PlayBook’ menu item on their BlackBerry smartphone. Once the devices have been paired they will remain paired until the user opts to un-pair them. Once the devices have been paired users can search Poynt using the enhanced PlayBook interface to call businesses and add listings to their existing contacts.

“The BlackBerry® platform continues to innovate with this latest device launch,” said Andrew Osis, CEO, Poynt Corp. “By pairing their BlackBerry smartphone with their PlayBook, users can take advantage of the larger format of the PlayBook while still taking advantage of all the features Poynt has to offer on their existing BlackBerry smartphone.”

Android apps run on a PlayBook (VIDEO)

Today at BlackBerry World 2011, Engadget got a hold of a demo of Android apps running natively on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Android's menu and home buttons are emulated using the standard PlayBook gestures, and the back button is replaced with an on-screen softkey. When the Android Player becomes available for the PlayBook, users will be able to download Android apps from BB App World. Also in the news of Android apps, the mobile device hit, Angry Birds, was announced to become available for the PlayBook as a native game - no strings attached!

How To: Use Flex 4.5 with AIR 2.5 on the BlackBerry PlayBook

As you might already know, the BlackBerry PlayBook from RIM will initially be shipping with AIR 2.5, not AIR 2.6 (this is to come later in an update to the device). Flex 4.5 SDK requires AIR 2.6 as the minimum supported runtime – this is because of specific feature support (such as soft keyboard) as well as bug fixes/performance improvements. We know however that a lot of you are eager to develop Flex 4.5 applications for BlackBerry Tablet OS, so I’d like to share an unsupported workaround that you can use in the meantime.

I’ve created a playbook_overrides.swc that monkey patches the release build of the Flex 4.5 SDK to remove all AIR 2.6 dependencies. This allows you to publish a Flex 4.5 application that targets AIR 2.5. Here are some instructions to get you started. Again, keep in mind that this is an unsupported hack until (1) AIR 2.6 is available on the PlayBook and (2) Flex and Flash Builder update to 4.5.x in June 2011.

Requirements

  • Flash Builder 4.5
  • BlackBerry Tablet SDK and Plugin 1.0.1
  • playbook_overrides.zip (Contains playbook_overrides.fxpl, playbook_overrides.swc and TwitterTrendsFinal.fxp example project)

Steps

  1. Create a new Flex Mobile project with BlackBerry Tablet OS as a target platform
  2. Add playbook_overrides to the library path. This SWC patches SDK and Mobile Theme classes to remove soft keyboard dependencies. Download: playbook_overrides.zip
  3. Open Project Properties > Flex Compiler
  4. Add “-swf-version=10″ in “Additional compiler arguments”
  5. Open Project Properties > Flex Build Packaging > BlackBerry Tablet OS > Advanced tab.
  6. Add “-forceAirVersion 2.5″
  7. Run/Debug to device or emulator

Troubleshooting

  1. Crash on launch (application briefly appears in launcher, then closes).
Make sure -swf-version=10 is set in additional compiler arguments.
  2. Blank or stuck on splash screen on launch
Usually indicates a runtime error. Could indicate an AIR 2.6 dependency VerifyError.

Next Steps

  • Refactor your project into 2 projects to target Android with AIR 2.6 support and BlackBerry Tablet OS with AIR 2.5 support simultaneously
  • Use the BlackBerry Tablet SDK for native controls in your Flex Mobile project
  • Try the TwitterTrendsFinal.fxp in the playbook_overrides.zip. This FXP already links playbook_overrides.swc and is ready to deploy. All it needs is an update to blackberry-tablet.xml to add the and of your debug token to deploy to a PlayBook.

BlackBerry to integrate Bing services at the OS level

Steve Ballmer made an appearance today at BlackBerry World 2011 and announced a partnership between Microsoft and RIM to integrate Bing into BlackBerry products. In addition to making Bing the default search and map provider for all BlackBerry devices moving foward, services will be added at the OS level instead of being bundled as a series of apps. This will bring about features ranging from voice and location-aware search to panorama stitching. It also suggests that we'll likely see another iteration of BlackBerry OS 7 sometime before the Holiday season later this year!

What's your thought? Good or bad for RIM to make bedfellows with Bing? Would a Google service be better?

LiveProfile for BlackBerry Updated to v1.0.10

Over the past few days LiveProfile has been experiencing record breaking growth. In just one single day 400,000+ new users joined LiveProfile. This kind of growth is not very common and hard to scale. For this reason, we would like to apologize for the recent outages and stability issues you may have encountered.

We have identified and fixed a major bottleneck which was causing problems with message delivery speed, loading friend lists, and generally unstable service. This is not a good first impression by any means and we have worked hard through the weekend to ensure this issue was resolved and will not occur again. We encourage you to come back and try LiveProfile once more and promise you won’t be disappointed! If you need to re-download you can do so by visiting LiveProfile - Stay Connected from your mobile browser.

We would also like to clear up the crazy rumors circulating that LiveProfile is a virus. This is far from the truth and we are a reputable New York City-based company trying to change the world through real-time mobile communication. Read more about this topic from our blog:LiveProfile

The LiveProfile team is now working on some new and exciting features that people have requested and we expect to release them shortly. Keep an eye on our website or Twitter for the latest info.

BlackBerry World Keynote – 3D, Special Guests, Live Demos and Giveaways!

BlackBerry World 2011 Keynote

To help celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the show, and since we’re in Orlando, the home of 3D, the keynote was conducted in 3D.

As you know, the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet comes preloaded with a ton of great apps – Facebook®, video chat, Kobo, Need for Speed, Tetris, Docs 2 Go, Podcasts, Slacker and more. In addition to all of these out-of-the-box apps, we already have thousands of BlackBerry PlayBook tablet apps in BlackBerry App World™, and today during the keynote, a number of new and exciting apps were showcased and will be coming soon – including Angry Birds!

Mike Lazaridis, Angry Birds, PlayBook

We also had special guests join us in the keynote.

Adobe®

There are more than 3 million active Adobe developers, and we’ve done a lot of great things with Adobe to enable the development of high performance mobile apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. So we were really excited that Shantanu Narayen, President and CEO of Adobe Systems, and Danny Winokur, VP of the Flash Runtime at Adobe Systems, were able to join Mike Lazaridis on stage to talk about some new developments and run through a number of Adobe® AIR® app demos for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, including Readers Digest (an app developed using the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite), Facebook, and Adobe Connect.

Adobe, Shantanu Narayen

As part of the keynote, Adobe announced that they are now shipping a major update of Creative Suite, Creative Suite 5.5, which includes the latest version of Flash Builder 4.5 that supports the development of apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. This will be followed with Flex 4.5 in June, an open source framework that will include support for building mobile apps for BlackBerry® Tablet OS. We can’t wait to see all the apps that will be built with these tools for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Microsoft®

We also were joined today by Steve Balmer, CEO of Microsoft. RIM and Microsoft announced a partnership where Bing will be deeply integrated into the BlackBerry experience starting this holiday season. BlackBerry devices will use Bing as the default search provider in the browser, both here in North America and internationally.

Mike Lazaridis, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft

Also effective today, Bing will be the preferred search and maps applications with regular, featured placement and promotion in the BlackBerry App World carousel. Microsoft showed how OCR camera search, voice search, streetside block view, photosynth panorama would work with the BlackBerry platform, and Blaise Aguera y Arcas from Microsoft also performed a number of demos including access to contextual info, local restaurant search and Bing deals search.
